WINE PICK OF THE WEEK: CAKEBREAD CELLARS CHARDONNAY

Author: Rhonda Monique
March 24, 2009

Price: $40.00

Cakebread Chardonnay

California, Napa Valley

Tasting Notes:
This Napa Valley Chardonnay (at right) is the essence of power and finesse in a grape that can sometimes be abused in the winemaking process by producers who err on the side of too much oak, alcohol and richness. The 2007 Cakebread is a very balanced wine with a yeasty, creamy aroma and bold, ripe apple flavors with just a hint of vanilla from new oak. This is a wine that would shine with a dish like chicken cordon bleu or Chilean Sea Bass pan sautéed in a little butter.

TASTE THE ROYAL JAMAICA GOLD ROBUSTO

Author: Rhonda Monique
March 16, 2009

Box of 25: $75.00 This cigar has a unique flavor, due to the inclusion of the namesake Jamaican tobacco in the filler blend. The Jamaican flavor can best be described as sweet and creamy. But don’t mistake the sweetness for sugary sweetness. The flavor is less pronounced, but yet it permeates throughout the smoke. Sweet with spice hints. Between mild and medium-bodied. The cigar smoke provides a fantastic aroma, and the cigar itself is easy to enjoy.

CD PICK OF THE WEEK ** SENZO** ABDULLAH IBRAHIM

Author: Rhonda Monique
March 11, 2009

Price $13.99

The nearly two-dozen tracks are an incredible potpourri of standards and original compositions that sing and swing in a number of tones and tempos: Banyana, Children of Africa, is a zesty dance, while Third Line Samba, a ditty inspired by the New Orleans street parades, reflects the experiences of the African Diaspora, contrasted by For Coltrane, a heartfelt tribute to the saxophone giant on par with Ibrahim s very personal take on Ellington s In A Sentimental Mood, and Ocean & The River open and close the CD and display Ibrahim s hypnotic sonic storytelling.

With enough stories to cover several lifetimes, told through eighty-eight keys, Abdullah Ibrahim s Senzo reveals that his …uninhibited, intimate relationship with sound combines the sage wisdom of an ancient shaman with the insatiable curiosity of a little boy …[the pianist] not only catches up with his ancestors, the widely traveled nomad also finds himself.
